Unit 54

Learning Different Shots

This was out first lesson of learning how to film. During this lesson we learned many different shots like close up, medium shot and long shots. We got into groups, one of us was the director, which was me, another person was the camera man and then the other one was the actor. I enjoyed this lesson because I was able to understand things like how to film properly, and the different shots.

Our First Short Film.

Before we started this film we were given a scene we had to film. The scene was get food out of the vending machine. Before we even started to record it I got into a group with two other people, in the group I was the story-boarder and the director, and we had a camera man and an actor. I then designed how I wanted each scene to look and the shots we should do on paper. This is so that less time is needed to make the film, because when we go out to film we wont be trying to think of what to record.
Once we gathered all of the shots we needed, we then went back to the classroom to start editing the clips together. After, we showed the film to the class and got feedback on how to improve.

Improving Our first Film

Then next thing that we did was redo the scene we have already done but with the improvements included. We all had the same rolls again, but we decided to re shoot some of the scenes to make it better. Some of the improvements that we had to do was make faster cuts, like cut when the motion starts in the scene. Overal, the film is a lot better then the first one was and I enjoyed the process of making it.

Our next Film.

In the video we where given a new scene to film, this one was about getting a bike. We all had the same rolls again, as we are starting to improve a lot. This scene I struggle more with to make, but overal  im still happy with the overall outcome.

Spy Vs Spy

This was the next scene that we had to do, this was receive a package from another spy. However in this film instead of letting us choose our groups we where put into randome groups to make us get used to work with other people. In this group there was more people, I was the story-boarder again and this allowed me to improve my skills a lot more and I was also an editor. We also had a director, a camera man and two actors.

Final design idea

The final design that I have decided to choose is the one where the top can teleport you when you put it on.
For this short film instead of the top being the item that makes the person teleport, I have decided to use a coat instead. This is because it will be easier to edit and film. At the start of the film I want someone to be walking along a street or a long corridor. While they are walking along they pass a turning and glance down, at the end of it there is a coat hanging on the wall. While looking down the corridor at the coat a sound effect is being played, the sound effect will be…. He does a double take considering whether or not to take it but gets tempted to. He starts to walk towards it and picks up the coat. Next he puts the coat on and as it passes over his head he gets teleported to another place.  At first he does not realise while checking out how he looks, then he glances up looking all confused on how he got there.

Scene 1 –

Someone is walking along a street/corridor. (Establishing shot of the street and the turning)

Scene 2 –

He is walking past the turning with the coat as he catches a glimpse of it out of the corner of his eye. (Medium Shot)

Scene 3 –

The camera switches between him and the coat; every time it looks at the coat a sound effect of it being amazing is played. (Switching between close up between the coat and him)

Scene 4 –

He gets persuaded to go and get it. (Starts of as a medium shot then turns to a long shot, camera will be from behind)

Scene 5 –

He arrives next to the coat, (medium shot, from the front)

Scene 6 –

Reaching for the coat (close up)

Scene 7 –

Checking the coat out, all happy (medium shot)

Scene 8 –

He goes to put the coat on by passing it in front of himself (Medium shot)

Scene 9 –

The coat passes over him. (Close up of the coat passing in front of him to block his vision.)

Scene 10 –

Cuts to him in a different place. He is on top of a car park, but he is checking out how it looks not realising where he is.  (Medium shot)

Scene 11 –

Realises where he is, confused and itching his head. ( Long shot)

My Film

Presentation -

Evaluation

For this unit we had to design a film on a topic of our interest, what I decided to do was have a coat that when it was put on it would teleport the person using it to a random location. To come up with this idea I first looked at several 90 second films that where very good. From that I started to get some ideas on what it was I wanted to do. The first thing that I did drew a mind map and started to come up with some ideas on what it was I could do. Some of the things that I come up with was a fighting scene, a funny how-to videos on how-to be a burglar and drawing how-to,  and a survival guide. Once I have developed my ideas slightly, I then chose three of the ideas that I thought was the best. I then started to explain basically what I wanted to happen in the scene and find videos I could use for inspiration or other videos related to mine. After I was happy with what I have gathered, I then decided to chose one I thought was the best and use it for my final Idea. The idea I settled with was where a person teleports about using a coat, the reason why I decided to chose this is because this unit overall is about our editing skills. With this idea I am able to make edits very easily and make a lot of edits and cuts to the film, I also really like the idea which is another reason why I decided to pick it. What I did after was expand on my idea even further by explaining what I want to happen. I then broke it down even further and split it into what would happen in each scene, this would make it easier for me when I want to start doing the storyboard. Once I was settled with what I have written I then moved on to the storyboard which was now easy because of how I split it up previously. After I finished my first storyboard I decided to do another one so I can develop the scenes more. Once I finished the second design I had several more improvements compared to my initial idea some of them where, extra scenes and sound effects. Now looking back at what I have done I was happy to start filming.

During my filming process I was unsure where I wanted to film a certain scene, so what I did was look around for an area suitable and close enough to my design idea. I eventually found an area suitable and started filming. One thing I found difficult about filming was that the outside light effected the camera a lot making several scenes hard see, I checked the white balance and adjusted it to the best possible type for out side but it did not make much difference. To solve this I think I would ether need to film somewhere else or change camera. Apart from that I enjoyed the filming process. Before I recorded I used my storyboard as a guide line, but while out filming some scenes where not necessary so i decided not to film them. I think that this was a bad idea because the more clips the more things I can mess around with in the editing process to see what would have worked. One thing that was good was that because I already had a storyboard designed it did not take a long time to record the film.

The next thing that I had to do was start to edit the film. I decided not to add any transition effects into the film because I think it would look better without the effects. I looked back several time to my storyboard to see where I wanted to add my sound effects to but it did not sound very good with where I want it. So what I decided to do was add a song over the first part, the fade it away and add another song, then do the same towards the end, I liked how this turned out so I decided to keep it. However once I have started to edit I noticed that on one scene that I was visible in the reflection on the glass.  One thing that I struggled with was using the programme to edit, this is because I have not  had much use with it, so I had to ask for help to do things like add sound effects and other things, but once I understood the basics I found it a lot easier to use. Apart from that the editing process was not very difficult.

Once I finished the editing, the film was now complete. I was happy with how it turned out because the music went well with the film. One thing that I did not like about it was the brightness of some of the scenes, this is because it was to bright and caused it to be a bit blurred and hard to see, apart from that the rest of it was very good. I liked how the music fit with it and how the cuts where made. If I was to go back and do it again I would need to reshot the scenes multiple times, this is because I would have had more of a verity to choose between when editing. Also I would have changed location because I could not get the wanted shot in some scenes because of it.

During this project I have developed my skills a lot more in filming, different shot and editing. I did not know much about different shots and how to use them effectively to give across a certain meaning, but now I do. I also know how to steady the camera better then before. Also I know how to edit films and how to cut at the right time to make the film faster. Overall I really enjoyed the process of designing, filming and editing process of this project.
