Development-

The aim of this project is to design two collages aimed at a subject of my choice. The subject that I have chosen to do it on is confusion.
Design 1:

I first started by designing the head and shoulders on paper, I realised that I am going to change the shoulders in the future by scanning something in so i did it rough. The background is paper that I scanned in and added an effect to it.

After looking at the collage I realised that I did not like how it looked and the colour. So I duplicated it several times and changed some of the layers to overlays and add multiple effects. I went through several changes until I was happy with the colour.

I then started to change the head of the person. What I did was first duplicated it, then added multiple shades of grey and smudged the colours to create a spiral. After I then turned it into an overlay and reduced the opacity until I was happy with the outcome.
Once I did that, I realised that the face still looked a bit plane. So i opened up a new page and scattered numbers about the page, different shapes and sizes. I then copied the numbers and passed it into the face, duplicated it and adjusted the opacity.

Looking back at my work, I realised that I did not like the position the overall image was. So I opened up a new page and changed it from landscape to portrait and go other people opinion on it.  I personally liked it more because of how it took up more of the paged making it more appealing to the eye.

I then felt that the background still needed some work. I looked back at my previous mood boards of things related to confusion and decided to experiment by using question marks, similar to the numbers. I then dragged it over to the main image and moved behind the head. I looked back at the image and I realised that the overlay from the background caused the question marks change. I really like the change so I decided to keep it.

Next I decided to draw multiple hands down onto paper to try to find out what would look best. After I scanned it in, I experimented by using different colours to to find out what looks best with the rest of the image. I found out that grey would work best because of the colour of the face.

After completing the hand drawing I realised that the fum was out of place so i rubbed it out and it started to look better.

The next thing I did was scan some cut outs i gathered from magazines of peoples shoulders. I experimented with several cut outs, but only the one I chosen work with it. I think this is because they style of the clothes works with the image and the colour also goes well with it.
Looking back at the finished piece I still think that something else still need to be added, but overall I really like the design of it. This turned out different from my initial idea this is because when designing the idea I thought it would look good, but when starting to design it I realised that it did not look to good. So instead of fading the head I put things into the head and I like how it looked.

Design 2 -

The first thing I have done was created a rectangle across the bottom of the screen and went through several colours until i was happy with the colour for the floor. I then made another rectangle for the carpet and adjusted the side of the shape to match the dot in the middle. . To make the collage look like its like looking down a corridor I needed to use the one point perspective technique and to do this I made a circle in the centre of the page for where I am looking to help line things up.

The next thing I did was duplicate the ground, changed the colour and resized it to suite the ground right. This is to add more depth to the image. The next thing I did was put one of the textures I have scanned in over the carpet and set it to an overlay.

I then added two more walls ether side of the floor to start to create the corridor. After I imported some more texture to put on to the floor and then duplicated it and changed the colour to add even more depth to the image.

The next thing I did was experiment with several textures to find out what would look best for the wall. I eventually found a texture I liked and then set it to an overlay.

To add more detail to the scene I included a door into it that I got from a magazine  When I first added it the colour was a bit bland, so I changed the levels of the image. I went through several changes until I thought the colours suit the surroundings. Next I adjusted the scale of the image to make it look correct.

I then duplicated the layers I had already had but reduced the scale of it until i was happy with the length of the corridor. I then moved the doors to try to make the image look more like one rather then built up from sections.

I then realised that the corridor need more depth. To do this I added a gradient and changed the position of where it starts from, to the centre. I set the colour to black and made it fade to nothing, then set it in the centre of the corridor.

The next thing I did was merge all of the layers together so I could add an effect to the whole image. I then added a distort to the image called twirl and adjusted the settings until I thought it looked good.
Looking back at my final design I am happy with the outcome. The reason why I did not add more things to the scene was because making the scene more simple is more effective then adding to much to the scene.

Final Designs.

I am really happy with the final outcome of my first design. As you can see from the feedback that I have gathered I used it to shrink the size of is head which made it look a lot better. I did try to make features out of the numbers, but however it did not turn out very good, so I did not decide to include it in.

This is my second design, I am also really happy with this design. From the feedback I got everyone seem to like it and no changes where needed to improve it.

   Artist Critique

The artist that I have chosen to look at is Maggie Taylor. I have chosen this artist because I the way her work looks, also in some ways her work can relate to my topic in some ways, which is confusion. This is because of how random some of her pieces of art are.  The topic of her artwork is madness/confusion this is because in her work there is a lot of randomness, like a woman walking a swan and someone lifting of their head. All of her work tends to include a person with something unusual about them or they are doing something weird.

From the selected images below I am going to write about the techniques used to make the collage with the floating tree. The first thing she would have done is took a picture of the sky and set it in the background, then she would have added the grass from a photo she has taken. To make the ground fade into the background she added another image of hills just above the grass and added a layer mask to it. Then she selected the gradient tool, made the colour black and fades to nothing and started to fade the image away. To make the fade more curved and patchy, she would have also used the brush tool and reduced the opacity on the layer mask to get that effect.  The next thing I think she would have added is the tree, this is made up from two image merged together by fading parts away and matching the colour until it looked like one complete image. After she would have designed the hole in the ground using the brush tool and circle tool, then put a texture over the top of it to make it look like the ground. Similar to the other technique she would have added a layer mask and repeated the process. Next the ladder would have been added, reduced in size and cut to fit in the hole.  After I think she would have scanned in some images of butterflies that she has drawn and scattered them over the top of the collage. Finally she would have scanned in something like paper to set as an overlay to add a cool border and effect to the overall image.

Comparing her artwork to another artist called Salvador Dali, her work is similar in the way that it is unusual and abnormal.  Salvador’s main topic of his work is surrealism, meaning that its not based around realism, like his famous piece of work ‘The Persistence of Memory ‘.  This artwork is similar to some of Maggie’s art, from the selection below the overall style and colour scheme are close but the techniques they used are completely different.

One of the reasons why I decided to choose her is because she has got a similar topic to me, which is confusion. As I looked into her work further I really liked some of her designs and the overall style of it.

                                                                      Design report

In this project we have to produce two collages on a chosen subject, the subject that I have chosen to do is confusion. The reason why I chose this is because I research several collages and the weird and confusing ones I tend to find stood out the best to me.

The first thing that I did was look through many examples of collages to find out what key things was in them and what caused them to be appealing. After I selected several collages that I liked, I looked into them further to find out what were the focal points, why certain colours were used and the layout of everything. After I chose some collages that I found inspirational to help me with some ideas and to start my development of my work.

After I gathered all of the collages that I liked, I then looked into my subject further. The first thing that I did was created a mood board of objects or things related to confusion like being overwhelmed with information and question marks. I then wanted to fins out what was the difference between confusion and madness, so I started to compare the two together. I created a mood board related to madness and I found out that they can be very similar and this allowed me to start to come up with ideas for my collage. After that I created another mood board, but this one was on what can cause confusion, like lack of clarity.

After I had several mood boards and Inspiration collages I then started to design ideas of what I could do for my collage. I come up with six ideas and started to focus on where I want the focal point to be. Once I finished that, I settled with the two that I though was the best. The first Idea that I settled with was a head in the centre of the screen, the middle of the head was going to be faded and an object related to confusion was going to be placed in the centre. Surrounding the head there was going to be some sort of optical illusion or lined background to draw your attention to it. For my second design that I chose it was a long corridor and the further it goes along the more it will start to rotate. Along the corridor I have planned on having doors and other things like plants and windows to give it a bit more variety.

I then started to gather resources to create my collage; the first thing that I did was gather a lot of magazines and start to cut out objects and textures that I though would be helpful. I also started to draw some heads and heads. I decided not to use photographs because I did not have a very high quality camera so the picture wont be very good and also I would find it difficult to get good objects related to my topic.

After I gathered all of the resources that I think I would need I started to produce the collage. I started by making the collage with the head, but when I started to design it on Photoshop, I realised that I wont look to good. So I started to change the idea and what I come up with was a person holding their head and I replased the faded part with number scattered across the head. I then change the background so it would cause you to focus more on the head. While designing it I also went through more changes to make it look better I thought that the background looked a bit plain so I decided to add questions marks to it and I really liked how it looked so I decided to keep it.

During the design of the second collage I decided to not add more scenery to it like plants and windows to it because I just added too much to it and it would become a mess. Instead I added removed it and just scattered doors across and added an effect over the top of all of the layers to cause it to twirl. I had to adjust some of the colours to find out what colour scheme would work best and eventually I come up with a finished collage.

While looking back at the final designs, I realized that on my first design the hands I made were off in some way. I should have added a texture over the top of it to make it match in some way because I find that I stands out to much, drawing your attention away from what I want to be them main focal point. After getting some feed back on it I was told to try and add more depth to the face and making features out of the numbers. Also try to shrink the head to make it look better. After trying out the feedback I found out that adding more numbers did add more depth to the image, and shrinking the head. However making features of the face out of numbers did not look very good so I decided not to add it in.
On my second design the feed back I got was all positive, they really liked how the corridor spins the further it gets and they compared my work to another artist. I was really happy on the feedback that I got.

During the process of creating the work I have learned and developed many skills. I have realised that many sketches are needed of design ideas even before you start to create anything. Another thing that I have learnt is that collages made from images that you have gathered are always better because people will not have not seen them before making it more appealing; also you can gather things you need and get the angles you want of an object rather then just settling with an image from the internet. My overall skills have improved a lot, now understand how to get textures to be applied to things, how to use the layer effects and many other things.  In conclusion I have really enjoyed this unit, learning many new tools and techniques to produce collages and on Photoshop overall.

Targets-

Last week- 30th April

-Develop my sketch ideas; write about what colours
and about where the focal point is
- Develop my proposal
-Gather together some more images to be used in my work.

Today- 6th May
-Scan my design ideas in and the cutouts I have gathered.
-Start designing some images to be included in the collage.(sketches of hands)
-Finish gathering the images I need.
-

Next week – 13th May
- Start experimenting with the images gathered to see what sketch idea will be best. Also experiment with the colours like black and white, to see what is most appealing.

-Start to produce the final collage.
